Home Remedies for Restless Legs Syndrome

All people should review their lifestyle and see what changes could be made to reduce or eliminate their RLS symptoms, changes that can start at home.

When you find yourself in a position that triggers Restless Legs Syndrome, plan on wearing comfortable clothing. Choose a comfortable chair or recliner to rest your legs in. If you can’t choose your seat, such as in a car, classroom or an airplane, you don’t have a choice in what type of seat you are allowed in, you may want to invest in a leg rest that supports your feet on a comfortable, adjustable cushion.

There are exercises you can do to control your symptoms before they happen. An easy walk before resting can walk away the tension in your legs. Basic stretching goes a long way to controlling your symptoms. While not really an exercise, meditation can offer you a way to relax both your mind and your body. Doing these exercises as part of your daily routine will help you feel considerably better when the evening time comes.

Your symptoms may be relieved by bathing in very hot or very cold water. Applying a heating pad or ice bag to your legs may also help symptoms. Keep the feet warm with socks and without restraining shoes.

Regardless of how much sleep you had the before night, get up the same time in the morning. Make sleep a priority and set aside adequate time to sleep. Make sure you have a comfortable mattress and pillows. Don’t feel guilty about going to bed. Think of sleep as your investment for health and productivity. Identify whether foods, beverages, certain activities or other substances have a negative impact on your ability to sleep. Avoid caffeine and any alcohol before bedtime. Don’t eat late at night and avoid stimulating or strong foods. Don’t feel guilty about going to bed. Think of sleep as your investment for health and productivity.

Other helpful home remedies can be such things as juice therapy, a daily dose of asparagus, spinach or kale juice, all rich sources of the nutrient folate, may be enough to keep your legs still at night. Supplements such as iron, Vitamin B complex and calcium and magnesium have been proven to help relieve symptoms.

It may help to avoid antidepressants, antihistamines, cold and sinus medicine, antipsychotic medicine, and certain anti nausea drugs such as metoclopramide or prochlorperazine. Taking products that contain these ingredients may make your symptoms worse.

Following these remedies can in some measures help to control the problems of RLS, but it is always recommended to seek your doctors advice before starting any treatment.
